World Literature 1, explores various forms of non-English “literary” discourse since the first epic, through the mid-seventeenth century. We will focus on textual studies of the major genres of this period, epic and tragedy, how those genres influenced later literary works, and how they portray “humanist” issues throughout the history of several national literary traditions.
This course is about narrative, or, in other words, storytelling. You will read personal narratives and study the philosophical tenets of creativity, and, on a more practical level, you will use what you have learned to create your own personal narratives.
Speculative Fiction asks “what if?” and gives us some provocative answers. This section of popular culture will look at novels, short stories, and films in science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
